Why You Should Not Ignore Joint or Muscle Pain

Why You Should Not Ignore Joint or Muscle Pain

Debra Murray

Most pain disappears after a person rests and takes it easy for a short while, so it can be a little alarming when the pain lingers on for months at a time. Pain is the body's way of letting someone know that there something is wrong. It is like a defense mechanism to persuade a person to seek medical help, especially when it occurs in the muscles and joints. Read on for a list of four reasons why you should never ignore pain.

A Sign of a Hidden Injury

Some injuries are not visible from outside of the body. There may not be any bruising, swelling, or wounds. For example, if a person has a hairline fracture or a sprain, in many cases, pain is the only way that they will be able to tell. Other invisible injuries that cause pain include bursitis, torn knee ligaments, and torn rotator cuffs.

Disease Could Be Present in the Body

There are several different diseases that cause pain in the joints and muscles. One of the worst of them is bone cancer. This cancer attacks the bones and marrow, which makes them more porous and fragile. Sometimes, a person will also have symptoms of fatigue and nausea with this disease, but pain is the most noticeable symptom. Another disease that causes pain is Lyme disease. It is caused by a bite from an infected tick, which leaves behind a rash in the shape of a bull's-eye. Fibromyalgia also causes intense pain.

You Could Have an Autoimmune Disease

Usually, the body's immune system is only activated if bacteria or viruses invade the body, but if a person has an autoimmune disease, healthy tissue is attacked instead. If the tissue that is attacked is the thyroid gland, then this will cause the joints and muscles to hurt all the time. That is because the thyroid gland affects the balance of hormones in the body.

You Could Be Depressed

Depression occurs in people who have an imbalance in the neurochemicals in the brain. For one reason or another, they produce too little serotonin. This causes a wide variety of symptoms, but one of the most misunderstood of them all is the constant aches and pains in the joints and muscles that it makes a person have. The pain generally lasts for several weeks or more and it is often accompanied by lethargy, a loss of appetite, and feelings of hopelessness.

This only a short list of the potential medical causes of pain in the joints and muscles. There are many others. So, if you or someone you know is experiencing chronic pain, be sure to get to a doctor right away for a check-up.
